Monitor Calibration
On properly calibrated monitors it should be possible to see a subtle difference between each of the 21 areas in the grey, red, green and blue bars below. If not, adjust brightness, contrast and possibly gamma. It's ok if differences between the two brightest areas are only visible on white background and vice versa.
Double-sized calibration bars in JPEG (suitable for printer calibration):
